The Province responded to the contaminated Walkerton water supply incident by establishing the Clean Water Act, 2006 and creating the Halton-Hamilton Source Protection Committee and other similar committees throughout Ontario. The Halton-Hamilton Source Protection Committee developed a Terms of Reference for the Halton Region and Hamilton Region Source Protection Areas, which guides the work to be done for their Assessment Reports and Source Protection Plans and includes a work plan and budget.
After two rounds of public consultations, including open houses, the Halton-Hamilton Source Protection Authority submitted the Proposed Terms of Reference for the Halton Region and Hamilton Region Source Protection Areas to the Minister of the Environment. The notice of the Minister of the Environment's approved Terms of Reference for the Halton Region and Hamilton Source Protection Areas was posted on the Environmental Registry on May 25, 2009. The Assessment Reports must be completed by May 25, 2010 as required by regulation under the Clean Water Act, 2006.
